The Plus-Size Wedding Guest Dress Guide (Sizes S to 4X)

Wedding season is here, and if you're a plus-size woman who's stared into your closet wondering "what am I supposed to wear to this?" — you're not alone. Finding a wedding guest dress that actually flatters, photographs well, and doesn't ride up the second you sit down is its own kind of challenge. We put together this guide to help.

The 3 rules of plus-size wedding guest dressing

1. Skip the "shapeless" trap. A common mistake is reaching for the loosest dress on the rack thinking it'll be "forgiving." The opposite is true. Loose, shapeless silhouettes actually add visual bulk. What works better: a dress that defines your waist (or wherever you want to draw the eye) and skims the rest.

2. Sleeves are your friend — but the right sleeves. Flutter sleeves, bishop sleeves, and 3/4-length sleeves all balance fuller arms beautifully. Cap sleeves can actually make the arm look wider, so skip those if you're sleeve-conscious.

3. Fabric matters more than fit. A dress that fits perfectly in a stiff fabric will pull and pucker the second you move. Look for stretch crepe, jersey, or matte satin with a bit of give. Avoid pure chiffon over a structured under-layer — it pools at the hips.

Best silhouettes by venue

Garden or daytime ceremony

A midi wrap dress in a floral print is hard to beat. The wrap nips in at the waist, the midi length is photogenic, and floral patterns hide stress wrinkles. Pair with block-heel sandals (not stilettos — you'll thank us walking on grass).

Evening or black-tie

A floor-length A-line dress in a jewel tone (emerald, sapphire, wine) photographs like a dream and never goes out of style. If you want something more modern, a slip dress with a structured shawl works beautifully and feels less "mother of the bride."

Beach or destination

A maxi dress with a defined waist and a flowy skirt. Skip white, ivory, blush, and anything pale — those colors are reserved for the bride. Go for coral, terracotta, or a deep teal instead.

What to avoid (please)

  • White, ivory, champagne, blush — bride colors. Always.
  • Anything see-through without proper lining. Photos under flash are merciless.
  • Bodycon with no shaping — even slim women avoid this. It rides up when you sit.
  • Brand-new shoes you've never broken in. You'll be standing for hours.

The sizing piece nobody talks about

Plus-size wedding guest dresses run wildly inconsistent across brands. A size 2X at one retailer can fit nothing like a size 2X at another. Always check the actual bust/waist/hip measurements before buying. At Kothlis, our sizing runs S to 4X (with 5X on select styles), and every product page lists exact inches — not guesswork. See our size chart here.
